Hattie It’s been an era of staying still and letting life happen in its (currently) slow way. I so often beg it to slow down in times of stress, but as soon as it’s manageable or quiet, I feel restless. I’ve spent January working and also went to Paris last week to review an opera. I’ve been in my crime drama era, so have much to recommend in that department, and have also started my New Years resolution of managing my money better. I think often women tell themselves that money and numbers are just something we’re ‘not good at’, but I’m doing my best to game-ify it and learn all about the stock market, savings accounts and pensions. I told you I was bored! What I’m currently reading: Chastity by Erik Varden
It’s not quite like it sounds. This book speaks about encountering chastity as a spiritual experience. Varden is a big culture boi, so there’s a lot of references to art, opera and literature. He deffo speaks my language in that way and comes refreshingly clean about the ‘Catholic priest abuse’ issue and why such abuses are so common. Favourite concert/event of the month I went to see the rapper Cupcakke a few weeks ago at Electric Brixton and that blew me down. A very cathartic experience! Becca I hope that, in a few months’ time, I can look back on this time with a cup of tea in hand, a cat on my lap and say “they were the worst few months of my life”. Preparing the Probate application for my mum’s estate has been anything but simple, and alongside that, there has been the musically-barren landscape of January and watching in terror as the far right scores another goal across the pond. Having said that, Stu and I have booked a two week (!!) holiday in August, and I’ve been tentatively enjoying becoming a regular gym-goer. My cold water swimming obsession continues too, and I got to dep very last minute on the Les Miserables arena tour just before Christmas. So yeah, I’ve been making some lemonade with some pretty bitter lemons. What I’m currently reading As you’ll hear in our next episode, I finished reading Naomi Klein’s Doppelgänger over Christmas. Stay tuned to hear my thoughts! I’m also nearing the end of Nikki Marmery’s Lilith (a feminist retelling of the Adam and Eve story), but I’ve been dragging my heels because fiction’s not really my thing. Favourite concert/event of the month I actually haven’t been to anything apart from to go and watch Stu play with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Of course, he is always the star of the show!
